Okay, last supermarket strip for a while, I hope XD

For the uninitiated: The green machine turns the jar of loose change you have lying on the nightstand into store credit to spend in a grocery store... after taking a sizable service fee, of course ;)

Yeah, roughly 10% of whatever you put in... used a Coinstar once! ONCE!!! And now I feed my change to the automatic check-outs.

The store I work at just changes it out to cash OR store credit (after the service fee, of course). But yeah, unless you have something like a water cooler bottle full of change, it's not worth using the machine.

@interstate2011: You have to turn your, er, paper money into coins to use the gumball/capsule machines. So wouldn't it make sense that the "change making" machine next to them turned paper money into coins? Why of course not! It also takes coins!

The coinstar where I work will give you gift cards worth the full amount (BTW, don't try this if you have less than 15 dollars, or it'll make you get cash instead). However, my favorite story about them was when I used one, asked for a gift card, and there was an error. To make up for it, the machine gave me a voucher everything in cash. Always better, of course.

Call me old-fashioned, but I simply use my coins for paying at the check-out.

First time i hear of coinster - they don't exist on this side of the planet, it seems.

I don't accumulate coins. At this point I have exactly 10 coins with a total value of 2,73€. My secret? When waiting in line at the cash desk, count cash. Pay the exact amount if possible. You don't have anything else to do while waiting in line anyway, so why not count your small cash?

If you get Amazon gift cards then Coinstar doesn't take a percentage. But it doesn't really matter when there are so many Pokeballs that need rescuing from those capsule machines!

Almost all the quarters get sorted out of my change for use at the laundromat. Then the rest of the change goes into plastic containers and I turn it into an Amazon gift card about once a year.

Most banks have coin sorting machines that don't charge fees for account holders. If not, give that two-ton sack of metal to the teller and they'll have the coins counted and deposited for you. CoinSter will never take my money again!

Unci: The name of the company was modified slightly to keep the evil Lawyers away. But the message is "Watch out for hidden fees, they turn a great deal into a not so good deal."

Take them to your bank loose, they'll seal them in a deposit bag and send them in for processing, often for full face value. They don't want your home-rolled coins because the count could be short - they'll run it through their own machines and roll them.

All of my spare change goes into parking meters. I have several working ones at home which serve as my spare change jars. All of the locks work and I have the keys, so the change is secure.

That's a reference to the first comic, where wolf says the problem with 5,99 1,99 and other ,99 prices, is not that it's misleading, but the useless stacks of change you get. And now there is the machine that takes that change and makes a profit for the supermarket by it. Pure injustice .

When I saw a Coinstar machine for the first time, I thought, "Why in the world would I PAY someone to take my change? I can just give it to the cashier WITHOUT paying them to take it."

I know this is an older one but the Coinster machines were introduced after someone filed and won a law suit against using them. If I remember it was about the customer could not be assured that all the money would be counted. Now banks here in the US are restricted from using coin sorter machines. They will accept coins but only in wrappers. I love Wolf by the way. His campus tour was the funniest I've ever read.
