When we moved into our house here in Wisconsin, we discovered a fridge and meat locker that had been sitting without power for over a year and still full of food, so my family knows of this first hand.

This... This is not what you want to bring people in to... I'm into cool funk, but this isn't what you want. This is why landlords should conduct a walkthrough with the tenant >before< giving back the security/cleaning deposit...

Oh, the Powers that Be! I went through this twice, decontaminating fridges for two different girlfriends. Rubber gloves and chlorine bleach are your friends.

Especially with my senior year roommates, those guys were slobs.

I had a similar experience. Thank fully there wasn't any eggs or milk in there but it was rather unpleasant.

To be honest. You don't even need food in the fridge to have it smell bad. I don't know why, but, refrigerators always smell terrible when you unplug them.

My sisters freezer experienced a similar "armageddon" when it ceased to work. She noticed it the next day, also the foul smell... ...freezer was about half full with fish. ....thawed fish....

Think about the swedish "delicacy" Surstromming and you get it somehow.

This rises two questions: a) how was the landlady able to store the keys in the first place? Or have they been there for the last months? b) do Jan and Amber have to clean up this mess? Or do they just nuke it from orbit and buy a new fridge?

Never actually had a furnished rental before.

Rented a place that was an abandoned hospital being converted into apartments, that was both creepy and cool.

Also forgot about 3 loaves of bread hidden in a cupboard for 6 months....they were breeding when we found them :/

I remember hearing a rumor of someone who was smoking when they opened one such fridge. It exploded open and the poor guy was hospitalize for a week. No, not the burn ward, was in for bee sting allergy. The fridge door explosively flung him out of the nearby window into the garden tree. The small beehive above was knocked loose and fell into his lap. He escaped by diving under his neighbors' swimming pool. He was in some kind of allergy coma when they pulled him out of the pool after the bees had left.

Actually had this happen at work.

Project manager loved to barbecue and gave us regular, weekly cookouts. Eventually, she decided to buy a fridge to store the meat.

No one plugged it in, however.

@soriac My theory was that the landlord told the previous tenant to leave the spare keys in an envelope and stash that in the fridge, which they did. Then the building's cleaning worker came by for a quick cleanup and was instructed to unplug all electrical appliances, which he did. The detail about removing food from the fridge was overlooked by both parties :P

@Blinkey: Damn, beat me to it.

I'm not sure BSL-1 is appropriate here. This kind of hazard rates at least a 2 or 3 for handling and disposal purposes. We're not quite at a 4 yet (at which point other fridges would immediately begin showing symptoms, even those that are plugged in and operating normally).

Maybe this is the point where they have a crossover with Doc Nickel from "The Whiteboard." Wolf: "Maybe my new PhD advisor can help." Doc: "Yeah, I've had experience with this sort of thing. You might lose your security deposit, but I'm good at repairing things before anyone notices."

This was like my first dorm room, except the horrid mess extended to the rest of the kitchen, and the entire apartment-dorm. I spent six solid hours cleaning everything, when the dorm supervisors came by and said I was placed in the wrong dorm room.

@Lonewolf: Thanks. I might be out of the paintball game for a while more still, as I'm working on a new job and my shifts overrun my weekends. I use an A-5 with some mods...unfortunately it looks like a G36 (including the stock, foreguard, and hammerhead barrel, which gives me the accuracy I want but it makes it a large profile target)!

I remember leaving a fermented gift for my landlady when I left an apartment in DC. However that gift was homebrew beer.
