This also actually happened :\ I ended up drawing a lot stuff on paper, which my co-workers mistakenly thought were done in software (after they were scanned and copied).

I've deliberately held off buying a tablet because of advice that you need to learn drawing with pencil & paper first to curb the habit of using the undo feature.

Nevertheless I can't wait to own a tablet.

She just got the tablet, there's always a learning curve. A few hours at the very least just to get the settings right and such. If they need the sketch right this moment (IE Today) it's faster simpler easier to just draw it.

What's a photocopier? I've used the big print centers that do everything but make the coffee or tea in the morning.
Also, had some new staff that are "Millieniums" that had no idea that pencils still existed

@Kangaar Foxfire: During my undergrad years at UCSD I was (still am) a big fan of ElfQuest, and Wendy Pini used Berol Prismacolor pencils. I still have a cache of those. Then they brought Sonny Strait onto the art team, and he knew how to draw the characters...but also used a tablet. Tactile media has a certain "grab" to it.

Even a cheapie Wacom tablet like a '90's model Graphire has decent quality, and I had a tiny one. Worked well until I lost the stylus and picked up a Wacom Intuos2 6x8 on eBay. But Jessie's got some things to deal with...

First, unless she has a tablet at home, she has to put visual attention on the screen while her hand is on the tablet. This takes some getting used to. (If they gave her a Cintiq, this wouldn't be a problem...). Second, the stylus doesn't have the tactile "grab" of media on paper. Third, and this is one biggie...you need to know how to program the damn thing in order for your idea of pressure to translate to the desired effect!

Pen&paper are cool, but they don't have a Ctl-Z, only this big eraser function which used to erase the paper, too :-)

And I would like to nominate as the photo-copier-noises the good old KER-XERO-Z inflection :-)

@Brighttail It's saved my bacon more than once when I've accidentally deleted several paragraphs, or pages, of typed manuscript. WHEW! Of course, until I heard about it, I had to REMEMBER everything I had typed. (Buzzer sound) I didn't. Thankfully, I now about it now.

If Leonardo had software, would Mona Lisa be a robot ? On the rare occasions when I try to draw, I end up using the eraser as much as the pencil. Got to respect people who have real talent.

@Kangaar Foxfire there is another issue that people who are used to pen&paper can't get used to rather small tablets, because their motor instincts can't scale the movements. Large tablets or "pen screens" do not cause that issue, usually.

I still use pencil/pen and paper than digital. Though I fell in love with Apple's iPad Pro, I still prefer the old school way.

Personally I've never been able to draw on a computer, at least not from scratch. When I drew in the Artist's Ambushes on FurryMUck, I would draw on pen and paper and scan it in and touch it up before sending. Jessie looks so cute bent over the paper drawing. :)

@Perfesser_Bear: The program isn't going to draw the picture for you. Even a 3d render program needs some serious work to have results.

From my limited experience with Illustrator, it's a cross between a drawing program and a programming tool. The program works in vectors, but you can program those vectors to carry pressure, pen tilt, and orientation, then have it simulate the medium for reproducible and scalable results.

Ctrl-z isn't the only tool in the arsenal, it's a hard and fast "wipe out my last move." You have erasers, masks, selections, vector selections...

@MiyuHogosha: You also need to tell the program what area on the tablet you want to correspond to the area on the screen. I have two screens but I have to program my tablet to only track to one.

@Kangaar Foxfire Trust me, drawing on paper is a LOT easier, despite the urge to press ctrl+Z from time to time
