I have a a long handled spoon I use for taking the used ice tea bags out of my tea pitcher and I also use it to reach up and turn on and off the range vent fan switch (I'm in a wheelchair).

I have a painter's 5-in-1 tool that I use for cleaning the prongs that stick out over the stove burners. And anything else that needs heavy scraping. You know what ? It's a poor tool that can be used only one way, and a poor workman who can think of only one way to use a tool. (and yes, scrub that spatula.)

As I posted over at Patron, I believe the correct tool for the job, and so do not have any dedicated, or non-dedicated utensils or tools that have been mis-purposed.

Navarre can confirm I have a large selection of tools and kitchen gadgets in the den.

I will note, however, that necessity is the step-mother of mis-purposing tools/utensils, and I have used something for a job it was not intended for, but that is rare. I end up going out an buying the proper tool for the job afterwards, and sometimes that tool is never used. :=3

Soriac, yes it does count. And I use my Dremel 'Stylus' with a fine grit sanding drum to smooth down the edges left by the diagonal cutters. :-)

I'm studying blacksmithing nowadays, just getting started, but someday I'll have some really funny-looking handmade tools lying around. As Chandler Dickinson would say, "need a tool, make a tool".

Lessee here, a knife as screwdriver was mentioned. I also keep used transport tickets to clean under my nails, I even fold them so they're more rigid. Small empty boxes (usually cookie boxes) as garbage collectors on my desk, which I later toss into the garbage bin further away. An empty bottle of nose spray, which I filled with alcohol; when I wanna erase something from my whiteboard but the ink has dried too much, I spray alcohol on the eraser. I don't know if this counts, since meccano and k'nex and lego pieces are for building things anyway, but I often use them to make practical items, usually for support. Like a desk tidy (complete with tiny drawers to keep small junk), a few laptop and tablet elevating-thingies, and recently for holding trays upright in the kitchen (they were just leaning against a wall and kept sliding off across the counter).

S'aaruuk/Soriac: While it's a bit of overkill, my Lindstrom dikes do a better job on toenails than any other tool I've tried, special-built for the job or not. Gave up looking for anything else a loong time ago. In fact, it's a bit amazing just how awful some of the expensive, fancy tools are so lousy. (I'm tired. make not sense. srry.) Cheap business cards make great contact cleaners. (Pinball, ignition points, relays in general.) Obsolete processor fans for cooling fursuit heads.

$15 Nokia Win 8 phones make great media/youtube/music pl;ayers, decent pocket cameras and handle up to 128GB microSD cards, too! A couple of lower capacity free SSD drives with a USB 3 cable make great veryfast data transfer devices. (128GB USB 3 thumbdrive 30MB/s, a 120GB SSD and cable plugged into same USB 3 hub, 250MB/s. A few folk are giving away their 'old' 60 and 120GB SSDs when upsizing. Work great for this.) All sorts of fun stuff with old HD magnets, too! Stubat the tweaker..:)

@Katnik: I've never used a chisel as a screwdriver, but I will admit to using a screwdriver for a chisel at times. Though Jsn's question, I believe, aimed at dedicated mis-purposed tools or utensils, not the occasional use.

Being a railroader I keep the railroader's chisel and anvil handy: a track spike and a length of rail. :=3

@Stubat: We think a lot alike. ;-D MOF, you're the first one I've heard in a LOOOOONG time that knows the 'business card points cleaner' trick. Before motorcycles went to fully 'pointless' electronic ignition systems, I carried a "diamond dust" nail file in my tool roll just for cleaning badly carbonized points....mostly in Harleys. ;-)

Katnik quoting C. Dickinson "Need a tool, make a tool." At least 30% of the specialty tools on my gunsmithing bench I've designed and made as are several tools in my motorcycle tool roll.

In the last panel, how did the range hood vent get to be directly over the window, which is over the sink? Shouldn't the vent (when viewed outside) be to the right of the window? Inside, the stove and the range hood is to the left of the sink.

@Stubat, @S'aaruuk, you guys sound like my kind of people. I was an arcade tech for a few years, know what else is great for cleaning switches ? A dollar bill, especially if it's a little beat up, that softens the "paper". @LionkingCMSL, my first anvil was also a bit of track, about the age of 12 I hammered an edge on a piece of flatstock, made a "knife", told my folks about it, they said, 'oh, okay whatever'. Good thing mom never saw the thing, it was about 3 feet long and would cut 'most anything. Work hardened edge, you see. I thought I was Zorro. Ah, fond memories.

@AncientWolf, good eye. Now that I look at it, that's also looking very unhygienic. Any dust or filth falling off of that vent would land directly on the window ledge (and in the frame), then get back inside right at the face of whomever opens the window.

By the way, was there a formatting error with the comment submission? I made distinct paragraphs in my reply, but it's published as a wall of text.

I'm a bit atypical for a male. I never repurpose utensils or tools. In fact I prefer to learn exactly what everything in a kitchen and workshop are for. The most recent addition to my knowledge hoard was learning that there's a specific small, round brush for scrubbing the bottoms of pans & saucepans.

To answer your question, Jan, I have a large rock in my company truck to use on one of my highway traffic sign stands (Wind Master). The screw thingie is bent and thus, can't be loosened off by hand so it can be adjusted for either 2 foot, or 4 foot signs.
