I suppose this gives a visceral definition to the phrase "glitter bomb"...

But seriously, why aren't fuses more obviously visible? Can't they make 'em pop up like pop-up turkey thermometers? I guess a status LED would work too, but where's the fun in that? ;)

Fuses usually spark at the moment of blowing - is glitter flammable ? Yeah, that would be a thing Wolf made, sparkling technicolor giant fireball. Try it again, maybe it'll work this time.

@David Klandagi: You too, eh? My sister had glitter everywhere when we were kids and I am still finding that stuff in my luggage from when I moved out from home.

There should definitely be a more visible indicator when a fuse has blown, and not just on the local device. I haven't forgotten the time all the power suddenly stopped in my apartment and then I found my idiot brother (about as smart as Wolf) in a futile effort trying to reset the breaker on his power board. I had to explain to him three times that he'd tripped the breaker in the fuse box and ALL the sockets in the entire apartment were out of action as a result.

Well... it's all true. Which makes me wonder if the creator of glitter (the plastic stuff we're used to) is an ancestor of Wolfram...

They make such things, the fuse cap has a neon light in it that lights up when the fuse is blown. It works because the circuit still wants to draw current, but is now restricted to what the neon light allows through.

If you have the type of fuse box that uses screw-in fuses, then ask at your local hardware store for "Circuit Breakers". ( … Be sure to bring a sample fuse, so they can sell you the SAFE level of protection! You don't want a 30-amp circuit breaker in a 15-amp circuit, except when you're TRYING to burn the place down with overheated wiring!) They screw-in just like the fuse(s) that they replace, & have a thin, plastic button that pops-up when the circuit is overloaded --- visually, it's sorta like the plastic indicator that shows you when a turkey is "done". Just push the button back in to re-set the breaker, AFTER turning-off whatever appliance(s) originally overloaded-&-popped the circuit.

They do make Indicator Fuses, Wolf - Telephone Companies have used them (Buss 70-series, GMT and TPA among others) for 100+ years so a pin pops out the end or flips up, and an alarm goes off when it pops.

For large systems you put 100A or 600A fuses in parallel with a little 1A Alarm Fuse, so that goes last and does the alarm tripping.

Unfortunately, in my part of the world, we don't have resettable fuses, hence the idea for this comic :)

@Bruce B.: Yeah, you can also label your circuits properly so when something stops working, you can find it easier. It's tricky on breaker panels too, especially if the tripped breaker switch only deflects a little...enough to break the circuit, not enough to be readily visible.

Although there are easier ways to test a circuit...namely, wire a plug across a circuit breaker of higher current rating, and plug that in. (I tried to make a magnetic induction heater for physics class...you can do that with 50-60Hz 110V power, and for safety, instead of a regular switch, I used a circuit breaker. Problem was...I used the wrong kind of wire and it wouldn't work. At least the safeties did.)

Or, Wolf could just have used an induction-type ammeter.

What's he going to do next...the James Bond anti-theft device? Break a window, the car explodes!

A fork in the socket - but the fork has a plastic handle. It seems Wolf knows exactly what he can get away with. How on earth did he learn that ? Trial and (painful) error, I guess.

@Jan, I don't recall where you are (from), but pretty much every power strip you can get at 'Home Depot', 'Lowe's' or even 'Dollar General' are all equipped with resettable circuit breakers instead of fuses. They trip with a distinctly audible SNAP and show a white band on the black button of the breaker.

And most of them have an 'on-off' switch on them as well.
