"Stewing in their own pathogens..." Yes they are, and in the process are fortifying their immune systems.

I've had 'Con Crud' several times in the past and now I haven't caught it in the past 8-10 years that I've been attending. I also never realized that I caught this C19 crap either. Totally asymptomatic. The only way I learned that I'd had it was that I tested C19 negative but antibodies positive.

So in it's own weird, paradoxical way Con Crud is a 'good' thing.

I think I caught con-crud one long ago at a sci-fi con. But in many cons since not caught it. Mostly because: Being careful, Actually getting 7 hours sleep a night, Eating something somewhat healthy at least once a day, And dancing at every rave from start until I can barely make it back to my room.

Ace_Country - Con Crud is the nickname given to the flu like infection that is often caught at conventions. Usually one person comes to the con with something, and due to close contact for days on end, it spreads like wildfire!

Would be interesting if this whole debacle made masks a bit more fashionable in environments like cons. Might cut down on the cruddifying.

@Adam It's that same 'ocean of adult beverages' that helps my immune system fight off the Con Crud. That's part of the secret to surviving cons......keep the blood content in your alcohol system low enough and/or vice versa, and nothing, no bug that tries to invade you can possibly survive. ;-D

@Mr. Casual I'm skipping MegaPlex this year because so far as I know, they're mandating masks indoors as well as outdoors within the confines of the structure. (Pool area, outside bar etc) Being a private corporation, it's their right. It's also my right to not attend even though Gov. DeSantis has declared Florida is now fully "open for business."

@S'aaruuk It absolutely is your right to attend or not attend for whatever reason you see fit. Businesses make decisions, and we get to decide if we give them our money. As it should be.

Speaking entirely for myself, I still feel more comfortable with masks, as I believe it helps slow the spread of disease. I feel civic-minded in helping to safeguard others, even if I'm personally inconvenienced.

At any rate, I merely want masks to be en vogue enough that I could wear one during flu season or at cons without getting weird looks. Because I'd gladly do that. Could even do designer masks with cool designs on them, or something.

@Mr. Casual ...every time I see masks debated, all I can think of are the Japanese, who were wearing masks around the city on a daily basis well before Covid ever hit. Given the classic concerns about con crud, I think masks at cons would be an excellent choice...though admittedly, not something to make mandatory (at least not after the vaccine gets widely distributed).

@Mr. Casual I have a mask with the Enterprise-D on it! Everyone at my small office is vaccinated, but I've found that masks GREATLY reduce allergies.

Also, Tetris-con must have bought all the confetti in the region! They ended with an explosion like a combo!

@Mr. Casual & Stargazer I think you misunderstood me. I have no problem with masking as long as it's VOLUNTARY. It's when it's MANDATORY and/or attached to some of form of 'vaccine passport' proof of vaccination to enter an establishment maskless that I object to and will actively avoid.

Which really saddens me as I really was looking forward to MegaPlex this year.

Just hoping they drop this position by next year.

@S'aaruuk Oh no, I understood your point perfectly. I don't agree with it, but that's neither here nor there. They are a private business and can require whatever they want. You, in turn, don't have to give them your money if you object to that. Fair and equitable. :)

In cases where it is voluntary, however, I would like there to be less social stigma around it in this country.

@S'aaruuk: DeSantis has demonstrated a lack of common sense...not with the "open for business" part, but with the careless infection and reinfection which is pretty much public endangerment. I live in CA, and we're even relaxing restrictions because we're getting vaccinated. Enough of the population gets vaccinated, and there isn't a need for the C19 record card.

I haven't had any problems with "Con Crud," though...but you're somewhat right about pathogen exposure keeping your immune system honed. Mostly, though, it keeps the inflammatory and attack arms of the immune system in balance and prevents the emergence of allergies (the "Hygiene Hypothesis"). And we don't necessarily want to just expose ourselves to something virulent.

@Mr Casual: Actually, it's my personal perception that there is a far greater "stigma" to NOT wearing a mask than wearing one. I've heard WAY more stories of people being 'attacked' by Karens and Kens for not wearing a mask as they lose their sh*t, screaming and accusing folks of "wanting people to DIE" than I have wearing one when it wasn't particularly needed.

@Silverwolf: BTW, I like your 'Skywise' avvy. I have a couple of pix of me (in full make-up/costume) and Wendy Pini together from an "Elfquest" con here in Orlando quite a few years ago. REALLY nice lady. :-D

Now, to your comment. It's not so much "lack of common sense" from DeSantis, as it's LETTING THE PEOPLE DECIDE FOR THEMSELVES. And we STILL haven't seen the massive spike in positive cases/death the left has predicted, or to put it more accurately, PRAYED FOR. He put an end to government mask mandates leaving in place the right of private entities to do so if they wished.

Best advice I got for you, take some time for yourself. Worry about nothing else, if not for a day, than at least an hour. Get something really nice to eat, watch a movie, spend time with what gets you to escape. Its hard, especially in this day and age, its nigh impossible. But trust me, you do what it takes for you and only you for a minute, and things will get better. The things you say, mean more. The work you put out will be better. And the pieces will come together easier for the puzzles your trying to solve.
