I remember the "dark ages" of text messaging… I didn't have a reason to use it back then, but I remember it.

Yep, that and the "after 9 pm" free messaging. It was kind of like "when the city lights come on, you better get home". XD

And Id love to see jessie send noods, even if she just ment some ramen ;)

I don't think we ever had the charge per letter kinda sms messages here in DK. But the early subscriptions did charge you per send message. That said, each sms were limited to a certain number of signs, including spaces. Early phones could only send one SMS at a time. So if you wanted to send a longer message you have to send more, one at a time. And hoping they be delivered in the right order, was not always the case ^^; Later phones you could write one long message, but it shown when you moved into more then 1. Like 2/5, if the limit was 5. Now, they just don't write anything and all SMS are free to send anyway. On most paid plans anyway.

...they used to charge by the letter? I don't remember that... though I do remember when they used to charge you for each text sent and received, hence the whole "data charges may apply" disclaimer whenever you signed up for automatic notifications of deliveries, prescription refills, etc...

I always figured the short-form texting came about because before the age of "smartphones", you had to type out your messages using the 10-key dialing pad, pressing each key multiple types to cycle through the letters and numbers assigned to it. ("7-P-Q-R-S, 3-D-E, 6-M-N, 3-D, 0-space, 3-D-E-F, 6-M-N-O, 6-M-N-O, 3-D, 7-P-Q-R-S"... typing anything more than three or four words at a time that way would drive you mad.)

Another note, the dark ages of texting was also not done with a keyboard on phones so the less letters used was because of having to use the same key too many times to get the right letter. (case example, old flip phones)

Back in the dark days of texting using the standard keypad at least you could text by touch without looking at the keys, it just took 5 min to type a message.

@Dragon-Furry and @The Valeyard: On a lot of phones, texting was limited to 140 characters per text, and if you went over that, it was automatically broken up into multiple texts (and each text consumes 0.1 minutes or so of plan time.) Also, when you got a long text, it was broken up into 140-character texts, and the receiver got charged for each read text.
