I seriously could've gone through a couple classes without textbooks. Hell, the professor didn't even have one...

I'm also not certain how a mathematics textbook goes out of date so quickly.

Oh, yes, and I love the old "Textbok is out of date" scam. I saw the difference between two editions of our 100 level physics book. They moved a couple chapters (Same content, just renumbered) And changed half the problems.

But we did notice that the prof teaching the course had his name as one of the authors on the book... Must be nice...

Heh, and they wonder why I don't donate to the alumni association! =^^=

Same one here. in my first jobclass my teacher said "Get the book, you -NEED- it."

...we never used it. =/

what i love is the amount you spend on each books being new or old edition but when you trying to resell them so that the new class can use buy it they buy it for cheap BECAUSE THE TEACHER DECIDED TO CHANGE BOOK it's completely ridiculous

I had a professor who said his theory on the constant changing of math textbooks because of "stale ink". Its the only thing that makes since unless book publishers are greedy and wanna rip off students.

How's this for you? I was taking a course online and I wanted to purchase a physical copy of the Algebra textbook we were using. I went to the publisher's website and found out I couldn't because they were only selling the new edition. Ours was already "out dated." LOL

I buy my books online for less than half of the cost at the campus bookstore, lol. I then sell them online again! And sometimes they sell for more than I first paid for them! =D

Actually, when I was in college several of the textbooks for my core classes were useful beyond the classroom, but I was studying Computer Programming. Also, we even had a book on all of the command line commands for Linux, including what all of the variables you can tack on do. Thankfully I had the cost of books included in tuition, so I didn't have to buy them all separately so the depreciation didn't hit as hard.

It cost more than $500 for my books, almost half of that being the cost of my Calculus book. And I'm in Calc III, so I only need it for one freaking semester and it's through. But I got those books completely off of scholarship money that would otherwise be useless, so I'm not really complaining. But still, books...egh.

And that is why I have decided to keep all my textbooks. I'll never know when i'll have to look somethimg up in the next 8 years of my college life.

I really hate online textbooks--when I needed my VB.Net for online book for an ASP.net class, my access had expired.

Only ever bought one textbook, I used the library for the rest of the classes. Passed all but one exam, and that one was because I didn't turn up to morning lectures.

I bought and kept all my textbooks (even the time a lecturer set an out-of-print one), but most of them I didn't use that much.

They are handy for distance education though, and I find the textbook is a better way to make up for missed lectures than reading the notes.

Glad my university buys them back for half of what you paid. 200 friggin' dollars for two books, most of it for one Sociology book! Thank goodness for Coursesmart where I could rent them...
